What is a Bowie-Dick Test?
It is a daily air removal test, not a sterilization test. Its primary purpose is to detect air leaks and inadequate air removal from the chamber of a pre-vacuum sterilizer.
Why is this crucial?
If air is not completely removed from the chamber and load, steam cannot penetrate uniformly. This creates cold spots where items remain unsterile, posing a severe infection risk. This is a specific risk with porous loads (like packs of surgical linen, drapes, and gowns) and hollow devices.
