Disposable dental bibs (also known as dental drapes or patient napkins) are single-use protective barriers made of absorbent paper or non-woven fabric. They are a fundamental infection control and patient comfort item used in virtually every dental procedure worldwide.

Their primary function is to protect the patient's clothing and skin from water, saliva, blood, chemicals, and debris generated during dental treatment.

Disposable bibs are typically constructed in a 3-layer laminate design for maximum effectiveness:

1. Top Layer (Bib Side): A soft, non-woven absorbent material. This layer soaks up fluids and provides a comfortable feel against the patient's skin. It is often bleached white for a clean, clinical appearance.

2. Middle Layer: A thin, impervious plastic barrier (usually polyethylene). This is the critical waterproof layer that prevents any moisture from seeping through to the patient's clothing.

3. Bottom Layer (Patient Side): A non-absorbent plastic or film backing. This provides an additional moisture barrier and prevents the bib from sticking to the patient's clothes.

Many bibs also include an embossed or printed pattern on the top layer. This isn't just for aesthetics; it helps to mask stains and maintain a professional appearance even as fluids are absorbed.
