The main job of a separator is to gently push two adjacent teeth apart, creating just enough space (usually 0.5mm to 1mm) for the orthodontist to place a molar band at the next appointment.

Separators are placed about a week to two weeks before the scheduled appointment to have the molar bands and full braces put on.
