Dental wooden wedges are used to slightly pry the teeth apart if a cavity is in between two teeth allowing the dentist to fill the tooth easier. Matrix bands and wedges are commonly used to prevent overhanging margins at the proximal area. The applied wedge seals the matrix/cavity interface, creates minor tooth separation to compensate for the thickness of the matrix band, and affects the proximal contour.
