What are the different dental materials?
Dental materials can be divided into different categories, including
Metals: These include "noble" metals (gold, silver, and platinum group metals) and common metals.
2. Ceramics: Feldspathic ceramics, glass ceramics, infiltrated ceramics, and polycrystalline ceramics. Using CAD/CAM systems (computer-aided design and manufacturing software), subtractive manufacturing techniques can mill various types of ceramics for aesthetic and structural restorations.
3. Resins: These are mainly made of PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate). PMMA is polymerized from methyl methacrylate monomers.
4. Composites: Composites are a mixture of synthetic materials that produce a hardness similar to that of human teeth when exposed to strong light. The color of the material is the same as that of teeth.
5. Amalgams: Amalgams are made of mercury mixed with a metal alloy (usually silver). They appear silvery.
6. Dental adhesives: There are many types of dental adhesives, most of which are made of zinc oxide. Glass ionomers and cement cements are also available. They are the same color as teeth.
7. Impression materials: These materials are used to take impressions of teeth to make models. These materials include alginates, plasters, silicones, waxes, and certain dental cements.
