What Is The Difference between B Class And N Class Autoclave?

The core difference between Class B and Class N sterilizers lies in their air evacuation methods, which directly determines the significant differences in their sterilization range and applicable instrument types. Simply put, Class B is "all-rounder," while Class N is "basic."

Key Differences Comparison

• Core Principles and Standards: Class B uses fractional pre-vacuum technology, employing multiple suctions by a vacuum pump to thoroughly remove air; Class N typically uses gravity displacement (bottom exhaust), relying solely on the principle that vapor is lighter than air to naturally expel air, which can easily leave a "cold air mass" inside the instrument. Class B complies with the EU EN13060 standard, which is the key differentiating factor.

• Sterilization scope: Class B is very broad, effectively penetrating and sterilizing porous fabrics (such as cloths and gauze) and hollow instruments with cavities (such as dental handpieces and endoscopes); Class N is limited to solid metals, such as surgical forceps, scissors, and glassware, and usually requires sterilization without packaging (naked).

• Drying effect: Grade B instruments have a post-vacuum drying function, ensuring thorough drying after sterilization, allowing them to be used or stored immediately; Grade N instruments have poor drying effect, often leaving water droplets on the surface after sterilization.

• Application scenarios: Grade B is standard equipment in hospital operating rooms, dental clinics, and laboratories, capable of handling complex and precision instruments; Grade N is mostly used for auxiliary sterilization in basic laboratories and small clinics, or for handling only simple instruments.

Summary and Purchase Recommendations

• Choose Grade B: If you need sterilized dental handpieces, endoscopes, endoscopic instruments, or pre-packaged surgical packs/dressings. This is currently the highest internationally recognized standard and ensures sterilization for all users.

• Choose Grade N: If you only need sterilized solid forceps, scissors, and glass bottles, and dryness requirements are not high. However, note that Grade N sterilizers cannot sterilize instruments with lumens, posing a significant risk of infection. This type of sterilizer is gradually being phased out in the professional medical field.
